Drug Copays for Prescriptions and Health Insurance
The Health Insurance Industry is evolving. WellPoint, Humana, Blue Cross of California and other large insurance companies may be trying to keep costs down. For example many baby-boomers are getting older and one of the biggest concerns is cholesterol.
What do Brand-Name Drugs have to do with your Insurance Policy?
It's very simple Merck's patent protection for Zocor is going to run out in about a year and so there will be eventually generic supplements or equivalents coming to the market. With this going to happen in the near future, Wellpoint is supporting this move by staying in touch with doctors to "reacquaint" themselves with the clinical studies about Zocor and trying to make their members have a smooth transition into being able to use a generic equivalent. Once patients are prescribed to Zocor they can be swithced to a generic when it comes available and may want to in order to save on cost. Now ask yourself some questions. Why would a large company like Wellpoint who also owns Blue Cross of California and has a customer base of 28 million want to support this transition and trend. It is because when a doctor gives a prescription like Zocor it is a brand name drug and will cost a little bit more then a generic. But eventually you may want to switch to the generic equivalent and save some money, right. Well so does Wellpoint, they want to save some money too; and so if you can be able to afford the drug you may have a better chance of not running into health conditions like high blood cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes, heart attacks, and or stroke.
So from being an insurance agent trying to help out the consumer I just wanted to make mention to the trend and win win situation our insurance companies are trying to do for us. They are on our side and trying to do another great transition to trying to keep the cost of drugs down and people away from strokes or heart attacks. This is what I would call a preventative care they are providing to everyone and looking out for us in the long run.
