Key areas to look at when buying health insurance
- Buy at least a $2 million dollar policy limit, covering all in illnesses and injuries. This should be one of your requirements when looking for a comprehensive medical policy.
- When looking at a policy that you are interested in siging up for you need to also make sure that you understand the limits associated, the room and board charges and surgical charges with that particular plan. Currently, most plans are very complete with the major medical coverage and expensive surgey coverage. The trade off in plan premiums comes down to what type of copay's and deductibles you will have in a plan.
- You will also have to look at if having a PPO plan is better that an HMO in your situation. PPO plans use a preferred provider network and you have more flexibility of doctors. The HMO is a health managed organization and your primary doctors will always be with this network, and so the network is where you should begin looking to find out if a particular doctor you would like to see is available.
- If your group coverage at work is not what you need in a plan, consider buying a major medical policy with high deductibles to plug the gaps or even switch to it permanently. It is also good to have your own policy that can not be taken away if you ever leave your job. Although you are eligible for Cobra, Cobra can be expensive and most people like to know that they have their own plan and not one sponsored by the state. This is a very important consideration years down the road if you what to save money and maintain a quality plan.
